Sources and method

One row per public announcement of a ChatGPT weekly active user milestone, dated by the day it was announced and taken from contemporaneous news reports quoting OpenAI or its executives. Figures are the headline milestones as stated (for example 'more than 800 million').

These are OpenAI's own claims and are not independently audited; most are stated as 'more than' the round number. The 700 million figure was described as 'on track to hit this week'. No separate 600 million announcement was found. A July 2026 Bloomberg report that OpenAI's models reach 'more than one billion active users' is excluded because it did not specify weekly ChatGPT users.
